The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) is a freshwater fish within the family Cyprinidae of order Cypriniformes. It was one of many earliest fish to be domesticated, and is among the most commonly saved aquarium fish.
A comparatively small member of the carp household (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a much less-colourful carp (Carassius auratus) native to east Asia. It was first domesticated in China greater than a thousand years ago, and several other distinct breeds have since been developed. Goldfish breeds differ drastically in measurement, physique form, fin configuration and coloration (numerous mixtures of white, yellow, orange, pink, brown, and black are recognized).
